Natura 2000 - Environmental Studies

Preliminary flora and fauna assessment for the area ‘Dill to Herborn-Burg including tributaries’ in the course of the conversion and expansion of the Haiger wastewater treatment plant

The preliminary impact assessment serves to determine whether the NATURA 2000 site may be affected by the project ‘Reconstruction and expansion of the Haiger wastewater treatment plant’ and whether significant adverse effects on the conservation objectives are to be expected as a result. If adverse effects can be ruled out, no impact assessment needs to be initiated after this assessment step. However, a Habitats Directive impact assessment is required if a site of communal importance may be significantly affected by a project.

Preliminary assessment for the ‘Westerwald’ bird sanctuary

The purpose of the preliminary assessment of the implications for the protected bird sanctuary is to determine whether the NATURA 2000 site may be affected by the project ‘Reconstruction of an arched bridge at the L 280/K109 junction (Steinches Mühle)’ and whether this is likely to have a significant negative impact on the conservation objectives. If adverse effects can be ruled out, no bird sanctuary impact assessment needs to be initiated after this assessment step. However, an impact assessment is required if a site of communal importance may be significantly affected by a project.

Amphibian mapping in the area of the L 113 road at the lake Maria Laach

In the area of the lake Maria Laach, in the road sections L113 and K70, significant amphibian migrations between the terrestrial habitats and the spawning habitats in the shore area of Lake Laach are known to occur. Due to the number of individuals observed to date (around 16,000 individuals in 2011), it was necessary to retrofit the L113 with amphibian protection facilities as a permanent installation for reasons of nature conservation and road safety. Detailed knowledge of the local amphibian species spectrum, the number of individuals of a species and the migration movements and relationships was essential for the proper planning of the permanent installation to avoid and minimise the above-mentioned problems.

Dismantling of a dam in the course of the creek Wörsbach below the village of Werschau

An existing dam in the course of the Wörsbach stream, below the village of Werschau, is to be dismantled. In addition to the approval documents under water law, approval documents under nature conservation law are also required. A specialist nature conservation report therefore had to be prepared. The possible effects of the planned measure on nature and the landscape were explained. In particular, information and descriptions were provided regarding the timing, duration (in the landscape) and areas (m²) affected, including construction site facilities. In this context, avoidance, minimization and, if necessary, compensatory measures were also planned and presented.
